The Problem

The front and side yards were patchy and high-maintenance, and the entry did not feel intentional.

The old lawn and planting areas were hard to keep clean and did not give the entry a cohesive look.

The goal was for pavers, turf, rock, lighting, and planting to work together as one design instead of feeling like separate pieces.

Our Approach

The design reorganized the front and side yards around curved paver movement, turf panels, decorative rock, lighting, drainage, and planting. The layout kept mature-tree context while making the entry sequence cleaner and easier to maintain.

The Plan

Used the 2D layout to coordinate paver paths, turf zones, lighting callouts, and drainage pop-up locations.

Kept the finished visual emphasis on the front-yard path, turf panels, river rock, and planting beds.

Adjusted paver border and planting decisions through documented client approvals before and during the build.

Included drainage and irrigation work so the low-maintenance surface changes were supported below the visible finish.

The Result

The finished yard has a clearer entry sequence, low-maintenance turf, paver circulation, decorative rock, lighting, and planting that read as one coordinated front-yard design.

FAQs

Can artificial turf and pavers work together in a shaded San Mateo front yard?
Yes. This project used artificial turf, paver paths, rock, planting, and drainage together so shaded areas could stay visually clean with less lawn upkeep.
What should be planned before adding pavers and turf near mature trees?
The layout should account for roots, drainage, edging, irrigation, and usable paths. This project used a 2D plan and field adjustments to coordinate those details.
How does drainage fit into a front-yard paver and turf project?
Drainage should be planned before finish surfaces are installed. This project included storm drain pipe, drain fixtures, and drainage pop-up locations in the plan.
Do San Mateo front-yard landscape projects need HOA or permit review?
This project source noted no HOA. Permit and city requirements vary by scope, so verify current requirements with a licensed contractor or attorney.
What affects the timeline for a paver, turf, and planting project?
Weather, material delivery, plant availability, and layout approvals can affect sequencing. This project ran from mid-December into late January with rain and plant-delivery coordination.
