Landscape design and construction for Woodside properties
Sequoia Outdoor is a landscape design-build company serving Woodside and the surrounding San Mateo County communities. The team plans and constructs integrated outdoor spaces that can include planting, patios, walkways, driveways, walls, lighting, artificial turf, outdoor kitchens, fire features, water features and other outdoor-living elements. Each project is developed around the property’s existing conditions, intended use, budget, access and applicable approval requirements.
Photographed Woodside Work
Two Woodside-area projects, currently represented through project photography. These examples show completed work, but detailed scopes, schedules and project-specific pricing have not yet been published. Each is a separate property.

Why there is no Woodside price here. A published range on this site is rounded from a signed proposal on a written-up project. Neither of these has a write-up yet, so no figure is attached to them. The nearby examples below carry ranges because they do. Browse every documented Sequoia project.

What should be considered when planning a Woodside landscape?
Five things worth settling before materials are chosen. Not every Woodside property has the same slope, trees, fire exposure, soil or permitting requirements, and a focused yard improvement does not need the process a complicated site does.
Site access, grade and drainage
Grade, construction access, existing drainage patterns and where the hardscape will sit are settled before the design is finalized, because on a Woodside property they decide what is buildable and what it costs to reach. Substantial grading, drainage changes, walls or structures may need additional review or professional input. The Town issues a Site Development Permit and a separate Fence, Wall, Gate, Pylon and Berm permit, so a retaining wall or a berm has its own application rather than riding on a building permit. Which applies to your scope is confirmed with the Town, not assumed. Town of Woodside permits and submittal requirements and checklists.
Existing trees and root zones
Mature trees shape where patios, paths, walls, utilities, lighting and new planting can go, and their likely root zones belong on the drawing before the layout is fixed. Removal or significant impact may need Town review or arborist input; the Town’s current form is the Tree Destruction Permit application, revised July 2025. We do not employ a certified arborist, so where an assessment is required it comes from a private arborist and belongs in the scope with a named responsible party. Tree Destruction Permit application.
Fire-aware landscape planning
Woodside Fire Protection District has a local fuel mitigation ordinance, No. 24-01, and publishes a guide interpreting it. Its Fire Smart Yard guidance defines the zones that shape a drawing: Zone 0, the first five feet from a structure, is for non-combustible materials only, which rules out bark mulch and planting against the house; Zone 1, five to thirty feet, is thinned, irrigated, fire-resistant planting; Zone 2, thirty to a hundred feet or more, is spaced fuels with dead vegetation removed. Hardscape and well-arranged planting can support those objectives. No plant is fireproof and no landscape makes a property fireproof; the district itself stresses that arrangement and maintenance matter more than any plant’s marketing label. Fire Smart Yard guidance and defensible-space information.
Water-efficient planting and irrigation
Plant selection, hydrozones, irrigation design, sun exposure and the maintenance you actually want are planned together rather than in sequence. Qualifying new or rehabilitated landscapes may be subject to the Town’s current water-efficient landscape requirements; the threshold differs between neighboring jurisdictions, so it is confirmed for your parcel rather than carried across from another city. Lawn is not prohibited. Where you want one, the question is how much and where.
Exterior lighting
Outdoor lighting is designed for safe movement, task light where you cook and sit, and restrained visibility at night, which on a Woodside property usually means fewer, lower, shielded fixtures rather than more. Fixture locations and shielding are checked against the requirements that apply to the property before anything is specified, and no lighting scheme is described as meeting a standard until that review is done.
Requirements depend on the property, the jurisdiction and the proposed work, and not every item above applies to every project. Local guidance reviewed 4 September 2026.

Budget and design fees
What does a Woodside landscape project cost?
Construction and design are contracted separately, so they are quoted separately and shown separately here.
Sequoia Outdoor offers a free initial one-hour onsite consultation, and the presentation that follows it is free as well. Concept plans start at $1,000, and more detailed design work is quoted according to the project. Construction projects have a $25,000 minimum, and qualifying design fees may be credited toward construction: if you enter into a construction contract with us within 30 days of your final design being delivered, an amount equal to the design fee is deducted from that contract.
The eventual project price depends on scope, site access, grading, drainage, materials, structures, utilities, planting, approvals and other property-specific requirements. On a Woodside property the access and the ground can matter as much as the finishes. A nearby case-study range is useful context; it is not a quote for a Woodside property.
Ask for the split before you commit. A proposal should separate design services, construction, specialist work such as arborist input or engineering, and anything excluded. If those sit in one number, you cannot tell what a change to one of them costs.
What 16 signed proposals cost shows the full spread across the Peninsula and South Bay.

Woodside landscape design and build FAQs
How much does landscape design cost in Woodside?
Concept plans currently start at $1,000. More detailed design services are quoted according to the scope. Construction projects have a $25,000 minimum, and qualifying design fees may be credited toward construction.
Does Sequoia Outdoor provide both design and construction?
Yes. Sequoia Outdoor offers a design-build process that coordinates landscape planning and construction under one project scope. The exact services and deliverables are documented in the proposal.
Can I see completed work in Woodside?
Yes. This page contains photography from two Woodside-area builds. Full written Woodside case studies and project-specific prices have not yet been published. Detailed case studies from nearby Peninsula communities are in the case-study library.
Will my project require a permit?
It depends on the address, the jurisdiction and the scope. Grading, drainage changes, walls, structures, tree work, utilities and other improvements can each trigger a different review, and a Woodside mailing address does not settle whether the Town or the County is the authority. Requirements are checked with the Town of Woodside, San Mateo County, the fire district and any other relevant authority before construction.
Can landscape design help with defensible-space planning?
Layout, vegetation spacing, hardscape, material selection, access and maintenance planning can all support defensible-space objectives, and Sequoia follows current Woodside Fire Protection District guidance where it applies. No landscape design can eliminate wildfire risk or make a property fireproof.
How are existing trees handled during design?
Existing trees and their likely root zones are identified early because they affect hardscape, walls, utilities, lighting, irrigation and planting. Town approval or advice from a qualified arborist may be required where significant trees could be affected.
What design deliverables are available?
That depends on the selected design scope. The proposal specifies whether you receive a concept plan, material selections, planting information, lighting information, construction details or visual renderings. 3D rendering is not automatic; if it is included, the proposal says so.
Does Sequoia guarantee the completion date?
Sequoia publishes an On-Time Schedule Credit policy. The scheduled completion date is confirmed after the preconstruction walkthrough, not at the first consultation. Credits apply only to qualifying company-controlled delays and remain subject to the signed agreement, its exclusions and the complete published terms.

Woodside and Nearby Communities We Serve
Sequoia Outdoor serves Woodside from its Peninsula and South Bay operation; there is no Woodside office. One thing to settle before anyone talks about permits: the Town of Woodside is an incorporated town with its own planning, drainage and public-works services, and it is the permitting authority inside its limits. Emerald Lake Hills, Kings Mountain, Skyline and Skylonda are listed by San Mateo County as unincorporated communities, so a property there is under County jurisdiction even with a Woodside mailing address. Woodside Fire Protection District covers both, and names Woodside, Portola Valley, Emerald Hills, Ladera, Los Trancos, Skyline and Vista Verde as its communities. Which authority reviews your work depends on the parcel, and it is confirmed for your address rather than assumed. County community list and Town of Woodside profile.
